Carrie Book Review
Hi everyone, and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. I’m slipping back into my Stephen King era, and perfect timing too, with spooky season right around the corner. So, let’s get into it!
Carrie by Stephen King follows high school outcast Carrie White. She's constantly bullied, called names, and humiliated by her classmates. Everything comes to a head on prom night when a seemingly kind gesture turns into a cruel and devastating prank.
This has been a book I’ve been wanting to read for the longest time, and I didn’t know too much about it. I knew Carrie had some kind of psychic power and was bullied, but I didn’t know the extent of the destruction she caused.
The most terrifying part isn’t Carrie herself, but what a person can do when they are pushed beyond their limits. Carrie was lonely, abused, and never had a loving, safe environment where she could just be herself. Especially when we see how much of a religious extremist her mother is. Her abuse doesn’t just happen at school; it happens at home too.
Suggesting that Carrie’s power is the only thing in her control, and when the prom prank is played on her, she chooses to get revenge. Showing the reader that revenge can often hurt the victim and innocent bystanders. There are consequences to cruelty.
It’s truly a heartbreaking story.
One thing I really enjoyed was the mixed media format. It made the book really easy to read, and it felt more realistic. It felt more like a real-life documentary. There were newspaper excepts, interview transcripts, etc. This was also a cool way for the tension to build. As the reader, you know that this one event has been highly documented, highly talked about, and how everyone had wondered what happened that night, what happened to Carrie, what triggered her, etc.
I honestly felt so bad for Carrie. She just wanted to fit in. She knew going to prom was highly likely to be a trick but went anyways because she wanted to fit in. Like are you joking. It was so sad.
Seeing her go on her rampage was also heartbreaking.
As one of King’s shorter novels, the book still pacts the iconic King punch. A quick and easy read. Overall, I gave this 4/5 stars, and I highly recommend especially for fans of classic King and horror.
