The Man Made of Smoke Book Review

The Man Made of Smoke Book Review

Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. A Book of the Month pick actually, and I have to say Alex North's book have been on my radar. I see them all the time in the bookstore. So, let's get into it!

The Man Made of Smoke follows Dan as he experiences a traumatizing event when he was younger. We see a snippet of what happens right as the story opens, but then flash forward years later, Dan is now an adult. He’s an adult, and he’s still haunted by what he saw years ago. Carrying around his guilt, he makes a career in criminal profiling. One day, he gets a call from the police department in his hometown—his father has gone missing. Along with that, a stream of murders is happening as well.

Dan travels back home, but the events of that one fateful day haven’t left him. He knows deep down his father’s disappearance, the string of murders, and what happened years ago are all connected. But how?

I honestly really enjoyed this book. If you’re someone who needs action right away or a very intriguing start to a book, then this is perfect for you. I loved the way this started; there was so much mystery and suspense. The author does such a good job at setting the tone for a haunting experience. You know something bad is happening, you just don’t know what.

The other interesting part was getting to see Dan follow his father’s trail as they both try to solve what happened years ago. Dan doesn’t start his journey until his father goes missing and he sees what his dad has been up to.

This was a fast read, a little over 350 pages. The chapters were short as well. The only thing I didn’t like was that the point of view would change every so often at the start of a new chapter. I wasn’t a fan of this. The first time it happened, I was so confused; I had to re-read the first page of the chapter multiple times to remember who the character was. Not only did we can character perspective but also the written POV. Dan’s POV was first person and his father’s POV was third person, etc. The first time was so sudden and expected that it just really confused me. But any other time we went into a character’s perspective that was Dan or his father, the name would be stated sunder the chapter title.

Overall, I gave this 4/5 stars and would highly recommend. Alex North has over books I’ve been dying to read and can’t wait to get to!

Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading :)
