Game of Thrones Season 4 Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog!. It feels like my husband and I are flying through Game of Thrones. Which means it’s getting harder to avoid spoilers. I swear things just show up on my social media feed unprompted. I’m dodging spoiler bullets left and right, but sometimes I’m not always successful. Thankfully though I’m still clueless about the ending. So, let’s get into it!
*Spoilers beyond this point
I don’t even know where to start. I feel like season four was some of the best acting we’ve seen so far. Peter Dinklage killed Tyrion’s trial and the “I wish” speech (no pun intended). I have a whole separate blog post talking about that.
This season felt like a big pivotal point for a lot of characters. Bran makes it to the three-eyed raven, Stannis is in the North ready to fight the White Walkers, the Wildlings attacking Castle Black, Sansa is finally out of King’s Landing, Joffrey is dead, Tywin is dead, Dany is learning what it takes to be a queen, etc.
As a writer and a viewer, I really like how the stories are starting to converge. It’s honestly kind of weird seeing Jon Snow talking to Stannis but also great at the same time. Things are starting to overlap and come together. Characters are getting stronger and filling out their shoes if that makes sense.
Overall, I think this season had really good pacing and a good balance of political affairs and drama. People were still conniving and scheming, but the stakes were so high in this season. For example, Tyrion’s trial had the Lannsiters are going behind each other’s backs. I mean we have Jaime bargaining for his brother’s life; we have Cersei seeking out the Mountain as her champion, Jaime sets Tyrion free which leads to their father’s death. I mean it’s so crazy how that family operates.
I have to say, I do like Jaime. I love his morally gray character; I find him so interesting. The love and devotion he has for Tyrion when on the flip side Cersei hates Tyrion. She will stop at nothing to kill him. I think one of my favorite Jaime scenes was when he went to Tywin and bargained with him. I mean he was willing to give up living at King’s Landing; he would’ve gone to Casterly Rock, married, and produced an heir. He stepped up especially after learning (back in season 2, I believe) when Tyrion was on trial and needed a champion and wanted Jaime to fight in his honor.
My husband and I were convinced Jaime would’ve stepped up to be the champion for Tyrion, but with the complicated family dynamics it makes sense why that wasn’t the case. It makes sense that Tyrion had to leave the continent. We now get to see who he is without the influence of his family.
Then there’s the trial and Tyrion demanding a trial by combat because he knows how unjust the political system is. He exposes the flaws to society and shows how corrupt the system is. I still think about his monologue, and it’s been days since I’ve watched that episode. Everything about it was spectacular.
There was such strong character writing this season, and I really hope that carries throughout the rest of the series. Everything felt really cohesive and the blending of storylines was done really well. I can’t wait to see more of that going forward.
My favorite moment from the season was Tyrion’s monologue during the trial and when Ygritte and Jon Snow meet again during the Castle Black battle.
My favorite character this season was Tyrion again. He just put through so many trials and tribulations. His fight for survival is just his new normal at this point, and I’m interested to see how he does in the East. Maybe he teams up with Dany…a new advisor of hers? So much to look forward to!
Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next week for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading :)
