Midnight Sun Book Review

Midnight Sun Book Review

Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. Everyone knows and loves Twilight, and I love the idea of getting into Edward's perspective which is exactly what Midnight Sun gives us! We get to relive Twilight through the eyes of everyone's favorite vampire. So, let's get into it!

In Midnight Sun, we are reliving Twilight but through Edward’s eyes. Almost a decade after Twilight was published, we finally get some insight into Edward’s head.

It’s been a while since I’ve read Twilight myself, so I couldn’t remember every single thing that happened, but I was able to follow along with no issues. I liked being able to fall back into the Twilight world. The books and movies took the world by storm and even now, the movies are still well loved. Twilight is just iconic. I was late to the game regarding reading the book series (and I still haven’t read Breaking Dawn), but all that aside, even when I read it years later it was an enjoyable experience.

Now, Twilight is like 350ish pages whereas Midnight Sun is 820ish pages. Which makes sense because Edward never sleeps. Was 800 pages really necessary though, I don’t think so. I got a little bored about 50% of the way through. It’s just a lot of internal dialogue (obviously) and as a reader, I personally don’t always like that. I need dialogue and action to keep me invested.

I will say though, it was cool to read Edward’s thoughts about Bella. From when she’s the shiny new toy at school, to the iconic Biology class scene where Edward looks pained to even breathe. We get to see him go from needing to stay away from her to can’t stay away from her. We see him fall in love, we see just how protective he is, we see the extent of the Cullen’s powers and Edward’s mind reading.

My favorite part was when Edward realized he couldn’t read Bella’s mind. For the first time ever, he didn’t know what someone was thinking. When you put it that way, it does kind of seem like fate for them. We get to see how he reads her body language instead. His constant need to know what she’s thinking.

I feel like the Movie Edward is a little more chill than Book Edward. But we get to see what he really thinks of himself. The deep inner struggle he has with who he wants to be for Bella and the idea of what a vampire actually is supposed to be.

Plus, we also get more backstory on the Cullen family. I liked hearing it from Edward’s perspective. I don’t think I ever knew what happened to Emmett. They don’t cover it in the movies, and I’m not sure how much family history is covered in the Breaking Dawn book.

The only things I didn’t like were that the book was a little too long. I think it could’ve been 200-300 pages shorter, the chapters a little shorter, and at times it felt a little like Twilight fan fiction especially in the first hundred pages or so.

Although it’s a long book, I do recommend checking it out especially fans of the Twilight universe. I do still think it’s worth it to read Edward’s perspective. It was really cool and really enhanced Twilight overall. I really want to watch the Twilight movie now. Overall, I gave this 3/5 stars.

Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading :)
