In Her Own League Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, we have to talk about one of my favorite sports romance series, The Windy City series by Liz Tomforde. In Her Own League is a spinoff from Windy City. In Her Own League takes us back to the Warrior’s team with characters we all know and love from Caught Up and Play Along. So, let’s get into it!
In Caught Up and Play Along we met Reese and Monty. Monty is the admired team coach that treats the team as his own family, as well as Miller’s dad. Reese is the new team owner and first female owner in the MLB. She’s taking over for her grandfather and immediately is facing a lot of pressure externally but also internally. Reese and Monty do not get along. Each have their own view of how the team should run. Both think of the other as an obstacle.
But the more they work together, the closer they become and slowly start to realize that their initial judgements were wrong. Now they’re falling for the last person they can fall for. Reese not only has her reputation to think about, but Monty’s as well and vice versa. What happens when they can’t stay away from each other? What happens when the one person they want the most is the one person they can’t have?
This was everything I wanted and more. Liz Tomforde just writes the best banter between characters and the best chemistry. I adore Reese and Monty.
I’m not usually someone who likes dislike to lovers (or haters to lovers) because sometimes the author writes the banter between the characters in a way that comes off as the characters hating each other (I’m looking at you Quick Silver). However, I thought this was really well done. The dislike the characters felt towards each other made sense and then the dislike was reasonably explained away and done so in a timely manner. Reese and Monty didn’t just have one encounter and their feelings immediately turned into love.
I also loved getting to see more of Miller, Kai, Isaiah and Kennedy. Caught Up and Play Along were two of my favorite books from the series, and I absolutely adore these characters.
Speaking of Miller, it was cool to see Monty’s perspective of their relationship. Monty is such a sweetheart and family is so important to him. He’s a really admirable dad. I couldn’t hype this book up enough! Seriously so good.
Overall, I gave this 5/5 stars. I highly recommend reading the entire Windy City Series. It's one of the best sports romance series out there. Tomforde's new series will be out later this year, and we get to meet a whole new cast of characters!
Things I liked: Monty and Reese were unable to stay away from each other, Reese’s two-steps-ahead thinking, Monty’s perspective on his relationship with Miller, the team-family vibes.
Tropes: Boss x Employee, age gap, workplace romance, women in sports, dislike to lovers, dual POV.
Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next week for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading :)
