Dark is When the Devil Comes Book Review
Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog! Today, I am back with another book review. Daisy Pearce has been on my radar ever since I read Something in the Walls. That book truly blew my mind. So when I saw Dark is When the Devil Comes was coming out so soon, I knew I had to pick it up. So, let's get into it!
Dark is When the Devil Comes follows sisters Hazel and Cathy. Hazel is to get her life together after her husband serves her divorce papers. Down on her luck, she returns to her hometown in hopes of righting some wrongs, finding a routine, and trying to put the pieces of her life back together. Her plans are derailed shortly after returning home. Now she’s in a dangerous position and the ghosts and demons she thought she locked away are back.
Cathy hasn’t spoken to Hazel in years after a falling out. She’s shocked when Hazel calls and wants to catch up. Apparently, she’s back in town. Cathy is even more surprised when Hazel doesn’t show up to meet her. When strange things keep happening, she decides to take matters into her own hands and look for Hazel. Although, she’s not sure what she’s going to find.
The best thing about Pearce's writing is how gorgeously haunting the prose and imagery is. It makes your skin crawl but also keep you hooked. The tension, the stakes, the trauma....she does a great job of blurring the lines between psychological horror and supernatural horror.
As the reader you're rooting for Hazel to escape her circumstances, you're rooting for Cathy to find her before it's too late. It's truly a haunting tale. A mix of small-town secrets, gothic folklore vibes, and a chilling haunted forest. A recipe for a perfect horror novel.
This was a fast read too! Just over 300 pages. The chapter are super short, so you'll feel like you're flying through the book.
Daisy Pearce has quickly become one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait for her next book already.
Overall, I highly recommend this and Something in the Walls! 4/5 stars!
