Wicked Games Book Review

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the blog! I am back with another book review. A romantasy based on Dante's Inferno and the nine circles of hell. So, let's get into it!

Phantasma follows, Ophelia Grimm, a Necromancer who recently reached her full powers due to her mother's recent passing. Her and her sister Genevieve, are dealing with their new reality. On top of her grieving, Ophelia learns that they are about to lose their manor as well. It seems that her mother and her sister are full of secrets. Things take an even worse turn when Genevieve enters the deadly, dangerous game of Phantasma. Ophelia is forced to enter the game hopes of finding and saving her sister. The game consists of nine rounds each linked to one of the circles of hell. Complete all nine levels and the lone winner gets a wish from a Devil. A wish that would solve all of Ophelia's problems.

I absolutely loved this book. I'm someone who doesn't dabble in the romantasy genre all too often which makes this the perfect book. The world building was simple but made sense. It wasn't overwhelming. The rules of magic were easy to follow. The hierarchy of creatures was easy to understand. I love Dante's Inferno, so anything relating to the work itself, you can count me in! I loved how unique this plot was. I loved the idea of the game.

I will say, Blackwell, the phantom that helps Ophelia during her time in Phatasma is described as having white hair and green eyes. A phantom with white hair and green eyes! Sound familiar?

I'm totally kidding, but it was the first thing I thought of when we get Blackwell's physical description.

The chemistry between Ophelia and Blackwell was also written really well. I really liked them together.

There were also twists in the end that I wasn't expecting. The book kept me very engaged, and I honestly couldn't put it down. I gave Phantasma 4/5 stars!

Now in Enchantra, we get Genevieve's story. Genevieve is off in Italy on her way to the Silver's manor after receiving an invitation in the mail from the head of the family himself. Upon arriving and being promptly thrown out by one of the seven sons, Rowin, Genevieve breaks into the manor. She then realizes her mistake. Enchantra is a game played by members of the Silver family as part of their curse. Anyone inside the manor is killed. However, a quick solution which results in a marriage of connivence means Genevieve is stuck and forced to play yet another devilish game.

I honestly don't know when book I like better. Both were so good. We're in the same world as before but its developed a little more. We find out more about the structure of hell, the hierarchy of devils, etc. The world building is very slow and steady, but I really like it. It makes digesting the whole story that much easier.

This book has has more of the enemies to lovers trope about it, as well as, faking dating (even though they are married so I guess fake marriage?) Rowin was such a sweetheart by the end of the book. Again, the chemistry was just so well done.

Each book does have a lot of characters, but Kaylie Smith has a way of writing everything so its so easy to take in. I didn't feel confused at all about anything when reading both books.

I'm really excited for the next book. I'm not entirely sure whose point of view we will be in, but I know we will definitely see more of Blackwell and Ophelia. I just can't wait to dive back into this world.

Overall, I would highly recommend this series especially if you're looking for a way to start your romantasy journey. These books are a perfect introduction for you. I rated both 4/5 stars!

Alright folks, that is all I have for this week! Come back next Wednesday for another blog post. As always, thank you for reading :)
